This “monograph” made me pretty famous – in the Arab world but really everywhere. I gave it the title The Logic of the Arab-Israeli Conflict: Oil, Alliances, and the Dollar. I finished up writing it in November 2000. I have vague memories of putting the last words together and editing it for clarity etc. I knew I had a very powerful piece of writing, a powerful argument. At least this is what I sensed.
It turned out I was correct, my intuitions were correct. Some of my friends [I will not yet identify them] in the Middle East, Sunni Arabs – and yeah they were religious guys – wanted to publish it and of course I said please do. So they published it and sent it off to the top players in the Middle East, the diplomats, the foreign ministers, the OPEC ministers and yes the heads of state. Then they wanted to translate it into Arabic. Again I was certainly not objecting to that.
The next thing I know my friends tell me that the Al Jazeera television news media wanted me on one of their top interview programs – the one where they have VIPs or heads of state. They would fly me over to Doha, Qatar. I was not in the United States at the time, I was traveling in Europe. So I went from London to Doha and I went to do the interview. They translated my English into Arabic instantaneously, while I spoke. This interview took place in January 2001. If I recall correctly it was the third week of January.
What did I say? I really do not remember much but I do recall that I told them war was coming – to the Middle East. They were pretty well freaked out by that, I seem to remember. It was something like an hour or an hour and a half. Pretty long. I fielded questions from the audience at the end, they were calling in. The calls were coming in very fast, so many it was impossible to get all of them. The board was lighting up, I recall. They wanted to put me in touch with some guys in Hamburg, Germany. These guys, the interviewer told me, wanted to publish all of my writing and any books I would write. Hey sure, I said.
Eight months later the 9-11 commercial airline attacks took place in Manhattan. The World Trade Center [both the North and South Towers] was hit by these large commercial aircraft and both buildings were totally destroyed.
I was not at all surprised. In fact, I was expecting something like this. I am going to at some point explain why I was expecting something like this. War is ever present. It was an extremely clever surprise attack on the symbol of Ashkenazi Jewish [American] “capitalism” and obviously everyone around the world now understands just how important and significant it turned out to be. I've been told by some people that the United States Central Intelligence Agency considers me the intellectual inspiration for 9-11. It was not just this writing but a number of other articles and monographs as well that apparently were hugely influential. This one was probably however the main one, I would imagine. I will publish them here. When I get around to it.
